The Throne in Heaven

I was once asked about the throne in heaven.

Question:

Why is there One Throne in Heaven in the Book of Revelation. Who is sitting on it? Does God the father sit on the throne too (Rev. 3:21)? Pls. give Bible verses too on your answers.

Rev 3:21 (KJV) 21 To him that overcome will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

You are asking about The Throne in Heaven, and why there is One Throne. First we will have to look at the Word Throne itself. You were using a reference in Rev. 3:21, and in that phrase; the description of a Throne is not really a chair, but rather a position.

When it says in my Throne, it really means in my government. Just think about it, “to him that overcomes will I grant to sit with me in my Throne.” We don’t think that this is only a fake invitation; and then there is really no one that are going to make it; or overcome, because only one person can sit on a Chair or a Stool.

The invitation is an average challenge to every believer, to make sure they are able to make it as an over comer, so that they all can be partakers of the heavenly government, or sit in The Throne.

Mat 5:34-35 (KJV) “But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne: 35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.”

In this Scripture the whole Heaven is described as the Throne of God. It is a position or a dimension where God lives and rules from.

It is true that the Bible is showing a Throne or a chair in some places throughout the Scriptures. We can see a setting in Daniel Dan 7:9-13

“I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire.

10 A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.

11 I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake: I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame.

12 As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time.

13 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.

14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

15 I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body, and the visions of my head troubled me.

16 I came near unto one of them that stood by, and asked him the truth of all this. So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things.

17 These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth.

18 But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom forever, even forever and ever.

19 Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his nails of brass; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with his feet;

20 And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows.

21 I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them;

22 Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.

23 Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.

24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.

25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

26 But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end.

27 And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.”

This setting shows a Prophetic scene from the time of Daniel and to the End of time. The four Creatures or Beasts; are the four great Kingdoms; or imperial administrations that are going to rule here in the Prophetic part of the world till the Lord is coming. Then at the end of time there will be a judgment, and a Throne is shown in Heaven. You can look at it; as a chair, but it is really a position in Heaven.

You have the Ancient of days, and then one like the Son of man in verse 13 and 14. This picture can be a little confusing to some, but it should not be to hard to understand. You have to look at God Almighty as the only invisible creative power that there is, which lives in a Light that no one can come to or ever see; or come near.

1 Tim 6:15-16 (KJV) 15 “Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; 16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.”

You have to take the natural figure of God out of the picture. God is always the Supernatural invisible power that holds creation under control. God never wants to be seen. He has no form or figure. He just wants us to submit to His everlasting power.

God created His Son Jesus Christ, to position him as the Highest rank in Creation. Jesus Christ is the only one that will ever visibly be sitting on a Throne or a chair. If you at any time see one sitting on a throne in heaven, it will be the Lord Jesus Christ sitting there.

Then you may ask, who is then the Ancient of days, and who is the one like the Son of man. It is really the same person in different time settings. Remember, Jesus first came as a Redeemer, a Prophet, a savior. Then after His death He became our High Priest, and have been so since he was placed in Heaven, and gave us the comforter, The Holy Ghost.

Then He will come as a Judge at the last day, and separate the living wicked from the living Just, before the Millennium starts. Then in the Millennium He will become King of Kings and High Priest. In Zch 6:13 it says:

“Even he shall build the temple of the Lord; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.”

All these settings are positioning Jesus Christ in a time progressing situation. No other person will ever take a seat on a Throne. On the other hand when you are looking at the position named; “IN THE THRONE,” then we are talking about a governmental condition where a group of people can be involved. Heaven itself can be that Throne, and it has a plural interpretation. Several people can be in the Throne. That is why Rev. 3:21 is written like it is. I pray this can clarify some of your questions on the Throne of God. God bless you.
